Ramble Guides was always going to be a series, and after a few years of walking, planning, testing, photographing, checking, walking again - oh, and having a baby - Athena returns with a new guide, The Lake District. Just like The Peak District volume, this guide is more than a list of walks and locations - it’s a love letter to the landscape.

Working on the Ramble Guides is such a joy for us as it brings together our personal interests as well as lighting a fire for  so many of the things that we love about our job, allowing us to use a wide range of our design skills in; layout and print design, map design and illustration, plus cover design.

The project always begins with the colour palette. Using the vast array of beautiful imagery that Athena creates and provides, we explore colours that encapsulate the landscapes that she writes about, both seasonally and geographically.

We then create the cover before pouring the content into the pages, giving the book its structure and rhythm - sprinkling the beautiful images throughout the book taken by Athena and her sister Anna. Finally the hand drawn maps and illustrations are created, bringing that final personal and crafted feel.

This is a guide full of walks, wild swimming spots, pubs, cafes, local shops, accommodation, and sites of interest, that will leave you bursting to explore The Lakes, and you’ll find yourself packing your rucksack before you even realise what you’re doing.

This is a project that feels so ‘Off Grid’, we almost can’t believe that we got to work on it.

The Process

The Results

“Creating a walking guidebook had always been a dream of mine, and when I decided to make that dream a reality there was no design team other than Somewhere Off Grid who I knew would be more ideal to make my vision real. Kim and Sally were a joy to work with; creating designs for my guidebook that made it unique and modern. Somewhere Off Grid went above and beyond to ensure the book met the highest standards before going to print, and instilled confidence with their professionalism and talent during a nerve-wracking process as an independent publisher. I will continue to work with Somewhere Off Grid again and again whenever I need design work, and would 100% recommend them to others.”
